We spent the weekend in Kortrijk, visiting with my grandfather. We stayed at the Hotel Damier which with a first mention in 1398 is one of the oldest in Europe. It has a genteel charm and offers impeccable service. Highly recommended. As is the hotel restaurant where we had a delicious dinner.

Kortrijk is a historic town with a picturesque beguinage and a belfry tower, both UNESCO world heritage sites. The city also offers a good selection of independent shops, amongst which a yarn store and a bookstore with a decent selection of English language books. And no place better to rest your weary feet and start reading that new book, or cast-on that knitting than Viva Sara , possibly the best coffee bar in the country.
